Commander John Garrett Barry

Executive Officer, Airborne Command & Control Squadron (VAW) 116

26 October 2020 A native of Youngstown, Ohio, Commander Barry graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy Preparatory School in 2001 and the U.S. Naval Academy in 2005, earning a Bachelor of Science in Economics.  He then reported to NAS Pensacola, FL for primary and intermediate flight training with the VT-4 “Warbucks.” In June of 2007 he reported to NS Norfolk and the “Greyhawks” of VAW-120 for initial training in the E-2C Hawkeye where he earned his Wings of Gold as a Naval Flight Officer in January 2008.

Upon completion of training, he met the VAW-113 “Black Eagles” on deployment in July of 2008.  While a “Black Eagle,” CDR Barry made three deployments and a Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) Exercise aboard USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN 76), participating in Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, Operation NEW DAWN, and Operation TOMODACHI as part of Carrier Air Wing FOURTEEN (CVW-14).  He served as the Communication/ ADP Officer, Aircraft Division Officer, and Assistant Operations Officer.  During this tour, Commander Barry graduated from the Carrier Airborne Early Warning Weapon School’s (CAEWWS) Advanced Mission Commander Course and was selected as the 2011 COMACCLOGWING’S Pacific Naval Flight Officer of the Year.

After his first sea tour, CDR Barry reported back to the VAW-120 “Greyhawks” as a Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) instructor in November of 2011.  There, he served as the Schedules Officer, Airframes Branch Officer, and Assistant Operations Officer.  As a qualified instructor in the E-2C Group II, HE-2K, and E-2D aircraft, CDR Barry instructed numerous classes, flights, and simulator events to ensure newly winged students were ready to join the fleet.

CDR Barry returned to the fleet in June of 2014 as the Airborne Early Warning/ Air Defense Officer on Carrier Air Wing TWO (CVW-2) staff.   While with team “Broadsword,” he completed another RIMPAC Exercise and a SOUTHERN SEAS deployment around South America.  The SOUTHERN SEAS deployment aboard USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73) included multiple bilateral exercise, including UNITAS LANT/PAC and BLUE SKY V.

Following his CAG staff tour, CDR Barry reported to VAW-117 as a Department Head.  As a ‘Wallbanger,” he served as the Quality Assurance Officer, Administrative Officer, and Maintenance Officer.  There, he was part of the 2016 deployment aboard USS HARRY S TRUMAN (CVN 75) with Carrier Air Wing SEVEN (CVW-7) and participated in Operation INHERENT RESOLVE and Operation ODYSSEY RESOLVE.  Later, as part of Carrier Air Wing NINE (CVW-9), VAW-117 participated in Exercise RED FLAG and NORTHERN EDGE.  While a Wallbanger, CDR Barry was selected as the 2018 COMNAVAIRFOR Navy/ Marine Corps Association Leadership Award Recipient.

Following his department head tour, CDR Barry went to Newport, RI to attend the distinguished U.S. Naval War College where he earned a Master of Arts Degree in Defense and Strategic Studies.

CDR Barry has accumulated over 2,000 flight hours in the E-2C/D and various other aircraft.  His personal decorations include Strike/Flight Air Medal (4 awards), Navy Commendation Medal (3 awards), Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3 awards) and various other awards and unit commendations.
