Commander Edmund "Finger" Poynton
Commander Poynton grew up in Havertown, Pennsylvania and holds a bachelor's degree in finance from the Pennsylvania State University. Prior to the Navy, he worked as a management consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), completing projects in New York City and Washington D.C. before relocating to PwC's Hong Kong office. He returned to the United States in March 2004 to attend Officer Candidate School. He earned his Wings of Gold in June 2006 and completed his initial fleet training at VAW-120 in Norfolk, Virginia.
In January 2007, CDR Poynton reported to the "Bluetails" of VAW-121 in Norfolk, Virginia where he deployed three times; once with Carrier Air Wing SEVENTEEN (CVW-17) taking the USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73) "around the horn," and twice with Carrier Air Wing SEVEN (CVW-7) onboard USS DWIGHT D EISENHOWER (CVN 69) in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. Commander Poynton served as the 1st LT Division Officer, Schedules Officer, and NFO NATOPS Officer.
CDR Poynton returned to VAW-120 in April 2010 as an Instructor NFO. There he served as the Weapons and Tactics Phase Head and Assistant Operations Officer. During this tour, Commander, Naval Air Forces awarded him the 2011 Navy and Marine Corps Association's Leadership Award. Additionally, while assigned to VAW-120, he graduated from the Naval War College's fleet seminar program, earning a master's degree with Distinction, in National Security and Strategic Studies.
Following instructor duty, Commander Poynton returned to sea in February 2013 with Carrier Air Wing THREE (CVW-3) onboard the USS HARRY S TRUMAN (CVN 75) as the Assistant Operations Officer. While deployed he qualified as Command Duty Officer (Underway) and flew combat support missions with the VAW-126 "Seahawks."
Prior to his department head tour, Commander Poynton reported to the Chief of Naval Operations, Military Personnel Plans and Policy Division (OPNAV N13) in August 2014, where he was the Navy Staff's policy subject matter expert for all officer special and incentive pay programs (N130).
In April 2016, Commander Poynton returned to Norfolk, Virginia as a department head with the "Bear Aces" of VAW-124, serving as the Administrative Officer, Operations Officer, and Maintenance Officer. He was designated an air wing mission commander, and completed his fourth combat deployment, supporting Operation INHERENT RESOLVE from the Arabian Gulf and Eastern Mediterranean Sea from aboard the USS GEORGE H.W. BUSH (CVN 77).
Upon completion of his department head tour, Commander Poynton reported to the Joint Staff, J-35, Deputy Director for Regional Operations in November 2018. During this tour he screened for Aviation Commander Command. He reported to the world famous "Tigertails" of VAW-125 as Executive Officer atMCAS Iwakuni, Japan in May 2021.
Commander Poynton has accumulated over 2300 flight hours and 400 arrested landings in the E-2C and E-2D Advanced Hawkeye. He has been published in the Navy Safety Center's Approach magazine, and twice in classified Naval Air Warfare Development Center Journal. His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Strike Flight Air Medal (four awards), the Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), the Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards), and various other unit and campaign awards.
Commander Poynton is supported by his wife of 18 years, Jannie nee Mak, and his two brilliant children Maeryn and Ryan. Outside the Navy, he is a USA Swimming Certified Official and a CrossFit Level II (CF-L2) Trainer.
