Commander Michael S. Silver
Commanding Officer, Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 21

Commander Mike Silver is a native of Long Island, New York. He graduated with a BS in Astronautical Engineering from the United States Naval Academy in 2003 and earned his designation as a Naval Aviator in January 2005. Upon receipt of the Politico-Military Masters Fellowship he completed a master’s degree in Public Administration at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government in 2013.
Commander Silver conducted operational sea tours with Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron TWO ONE (HSC 21) from 2005-2009 and Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron TWELVE (HSC 12) from 2014-2016. As a Junior Officer, he conducted two deployments with the HSC 21 Blackjacks; one to Udairi AAF, Kuwait in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM and a second aboard USNS BRIDGE (T-AOE 10) in support of THIRD, FIFTH, and SEVENTH Fleets during Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. During his time at HSC 21 the squadron was recognized for three consecutive years with both the Aviation Battle “E” and the CNO Safety “S” Awards. Commander Silver reported to the Golden Falcons of HSC 12, based in Atsugi, Japan for his Department Head tour. He made three patrols aboard USS George Washington (CVN 73) and three patrols aboard USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) in support of Carrier Air Wing FIVE (CVW 5) and Battle Force SEVENTH Fleet (CTF 70). He served as the Safety Officer, the Maintenance Officer, and the Operations Officer during his tenure with the Golden Falcons; HSC-12 was awarded the CNO Safety “S”, the Commander, Helicopter Sea Combat Wing Pacific Sikorsky Aircraft Maintenance Excellence Award, and the Battle “E” and safely executed over 3,500 flight hours during sustained South China Sea operations in contested waters.
Commander Silver completed shore tours as a Flight Instructor with Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron THREE (HSC 3), as Flag Aide to Commander, Naval Air Forces, and as a Presidential Strike Advisor assigned to the National Military Command Center, J3 Division of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In May 2020, he reported to HSC 21 as Executive Officer and in May 2021, he assumed duties as Commanding Officer of HSC 21.
Commander Silver has over 2,900 mishap-free flight hours in the MH-60S and is qualified in the MQ-8B FireScout Unmanned Air Vehicle. His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal, and numerous campaign and unit awards. He is married and has one child.
