Commander Jeffrey R. Schwab

Commanding Officer, Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 23

27 October 2020 Commander Schwab graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2002, earning his commission and a Bachelor of Science in Political Science. CDR Schwab reported to NAS Pensacola, FL for flight training in June 2002 and earned his Naval Aviator Wings in May 2004.  In June 2004, CDR Schwab reported to the HS-10 “Warhawks” for initial fleet training as an SH-60F and HH-60H helicopter pilot.

CDR Schwab began his operational flying in January 2005 with the “Golden Falcons” of HS-2.  While a “Golden Falcon”, he made two deployments aboard USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN 72), participating in Operation ENDURING FREEDOM and Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.  During this tour, CDR Schwab served as the Ground Safety Officer, Schedules Officer, Assistant Operations Officer, Assistant Tactics Officer, and the squadron’s NATOPS Officer.

Before CDR Schwab reported to the Helicopter Sea Combat Weapons School Pacific (HSCWSP) in late 2008, he headed to NAS Fallon to complete the Seahawk Weapons and Tactics Instructor (SWTI) course and completed MH-60S transition training at HSC-3 in San Diego.  At HSCWSP, CDR Schwab served as the Assistant Tactics Officer, Operations Officer, and Weapons/OPFOR Officer while also earning his Master’s Degree in Business Administration through the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS).  Following his tour at the Weapons School, CDR Schwab reported to the Carrier Air Wing TWO (CVW-2) staff, where he served as the Helicopter Operations Officer, Flight Hour Program Manager, and Air Plan Writer during CVW-2’s deployment on board the USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN 72).

CDR Schwab served as a Department Head at Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron FIFTEEN (HSC-15), the “Red Lions”.  While with the “Red Lions”, he completed a deployment on board USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70) in support of Operation INHERENT RESOLVE and served as the squadron’s Administrative Officer, Training Officer, Maintenance Officer, and Operations Officer.

Following his Department Head tour, CDR Schwab served as a member of Operations Team TWO (OT-2), Joint Staff, J-3 Directorate, where he was responsible for worldwide monitoring, crisis action, and strategic nuclear and current operational watch functions for the Chairman and Secretary of Defense.  He reported to HSC-23 as Executive Officer in April 2019 and assumed Command in June 2020.

CDR Schwab has accumulated nearly 3,000 flight hours in the T-34, TH-57, SH-60F, HH-60H, and MH-60S aircraft. His awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (3 awards), Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2 awards), and various service awards and ribbons, including three Battle “E” awards earned during his time at HS-2, HSC-15, and HSC-23.​​
