Commander Kyle Johnson

A native of Southern California, Commander Kyle Johnson graduated from Hawaii Pacific University in 2000 earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology. CDR Johnson was commissioned through Officer Candidate School in November 2002. He reported to NAS Pensacola for flight training in January 2003 and designated a Naval Aviator in July 2004. He earned a Master of Arts in Defense and Strategic Studies degree from the U.S. Naval War College Newport, RI in November 2017.
CDR Johnson began his operational flying in May 2005 with the “Eightballers” of HS-8 after initial flight training on the SH-60F/HH-60H with the “Warhawks” of HS-10 in San Diego, CA. He deployed aboard USS CARL VINSON (CVN-70) and USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN-74), supporting Operations IRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING FREEDOM. While at HS-8, CDR Johnson served as the Aircrew and Aircraft Division Officer and Quality Assurance Officer.
In July of 2008, CDR Johnson reported to the Helicopter Sea Combat Weapons School U.S. Pacific Fleet as a Seahawk Weapons and Tactics Instructor where he was awarded the 2010 Chief of Naval Air Forces Leadership Award for Helicopter Sea Combat Wing Pacific.
In March of 2011, CDR Johnson reported to Commander, Strike Forces Training Pacific as the Helicopter Sea Combat Training Officer for Carrier Strike Group Composite Training Unit Exercises.
In August of 2012, CDR Johnson reported to the “Firehawks” of HSC-85 in San Diego, CA. He completed numerous exercises and deployments in direct support of USSOCOM objectives in the INDOPACOM AOR. While at HSC-85, he served as the Assistant Officer in Charge for two deployments, Tactics Officer, Administration Officer and Maintenance Officer.
In November of 2016, CDR Johnson reported to the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, RI where he earned a Master of Arts Degree in Defense and Strategic Studies with a focus in Irregular Warfare.
In December of 2017, CDR Johnson reported to OPNAV N98 Washington, D.C. as the Reserve Helicopter and Irregular Warfare Requirements Officer for Director, Air Warfare.
CDR Johnson’s decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal and various campaign and unit, awards. CDR Johnson has accumulated over 2,000 hours in the SH-60F, HH-60H, and MH-60S.
