Captain Jeffrey A. Melody

Commander, Helicopter Maritime Strike Wing, U.S. Pacific Fleet

27 October 2020 Captain Jeffrey A. Melody of Youngstown, Ohio graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1996. Following commissioning, he reported to Pensacola, Florida for aviation training and was designated a Naval Aviator in August 1998.
Captain Melody’s sea assignments include HSL-45 Jun’99-‘02, where he received the NHA embarked Aircrew of the Year (2000) award for operations in the Persian Gulf; USS TARAWA (LHA 1) Apr’05-Jun’06, serving as the Air Department V4 Fuels Officer, V3 Hangar Officer and the Flight Deck Aircraft Handling Officer; and HSL-47 Apr’07-Oct’09, attached to Carrier Air Wing TWO (CVW 2), serving as the Operations Officer, Maintenance Officer, Safety Officer and Detachment Officer-in-Charge. During this time the squadron transitioned to Helicopter Maritime Strike (HSM-77), the first operational squadron to fly the MH-60R Seahawk and integrate with a Carrier Air Wing.
Captain Melody’s command tour was with HSM-75, assigned to CVW 11, as the Executive Officer and Commanding Officer Jul’13-Mar’16, assuming command in Dec’14. During this tour the Wolf Pack flew 5,096 mishap free flight hours and executed missions in the Third and Seventh Fleet area of operations, and CAPT Melody was awarded the 2015 Navy-Marine Corps Society Leadership Award.
Captain Melody’s shore assignments include the U.S. Naval Academy as an Instructor and Physical Education Facilities Manager; the HSM Pacific Fleet Replacement Squadron, HSM-41, as the Maintenance Officer; United States Africa Command in Stuttgart, Germany, J3 and J9 Directorates, and the Executive Officer to the USAFRICOM Chief of Staff; and the Joint Chiefs (JCS) of Staff J5-Directorate-Strategic Plans and Policy, as a Branch Chief in the War Plans Division managing Joint Force global posture and the development of a digital strategic planning system. Captain Melody assumed the role of Deputy Commander, Helicopter Maritime Strike Wing Pacific in May 2018. His education includes a Bachelor of Science Degree in Ocean Engineering from the Naval Academy and a Masters of Science in Engineering Management from the George Washington University.
Captain Melody’s personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and various unit commendations and service/campaign awards.
