Commander Jeffrey J. Lessard

Executive Officer, Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 41

27 October 2020 Commander Jeff Lessard is a native of Port Jefferson, NY.  He earned his commission in 2003 through the NROTC program at the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.  He also earned an Executive Master of Business Administration from the Naval Postgraduate School and completed the Naval War College’s Command and Staff Program through their College of Distance Education.  Designated a Naval Aviator in April 2005, he reported to HSL-41 for SH-60B Fleet Replacement training.
 
At sea, Commander Lessard served with the “Scorpions” of HSL-49 where he deployed aboard USS HOWARD (DDG 83) as part of the Boxer Expeditionary Strike Group, supporting Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, and aboard USS MCCLUSKY (FFG 41) participating in counter-narcotics operations in the 4th Fleet Area of Responsibility (AOR).  In 2013 he reported to PCU SOMERSET (LPD 25) serving as Air Boss throughout the ship’s acceptance, commissioning, and return to homeport of San Diego, CA.  In 2015 he reported to the “Raptors” of HSM-71 for his department head tour flying the MH-60R.  There he served as Officer-in-Charge of Combat Element THREE, embarked in USS STOCKDALE (DDG 106), and Maintenance Officer.  While at HSM-71, he deployed to the 7th Fleet AOR with Carrier Air Wing NINE (CVW-9) as part of the John C. Stennis Carrier Strike Group.  The Raptors earned the Battle “E” and Golden Wrench award for 2016.  CDR Lessard was recognized as the 2017 Officer of the Year.
 
CDR Lessard’s shore assignments include a tour at HT-28 from 2009 through 2011 as an Advanced Helicopter Flight Instructor, flying the TH-57 B/C and serving as Assistant Operations Officer.  He served on the staff of Commander, Helicopter Maritime Strike Wing, Pacific in 2012 and 2013 as Current Readiness Officer and Assistant Training Officer.  Following his Department Head tour, he was assigned to the staff of the Undersea Warfighting Development Center (UWDC) as a rotary-wing Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) mentor.  There, he also served as Director of the NUWTAC Program, overseeing ASW training and assessment for all deploying carrier strike groups.
 
Commander Lessard reported to the “Seahawks” of HSM-41 as Executive Officer in January 2021.
 
Commander Lessard is a graduate of the Seahawk Weapons and Tactics Instructor course and Naval School of Aviation Safety.  He has accumulated over 3,000 flight hours in military aircraft.  His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (4 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and various unit, campaign, and service awards.
