Commander Dave Vogelgesang

Executive Officer, Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 49

27 October 2020 A native of Indianapolis, IN, Commander Dave “Bang” Vogelgesang graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2004.  Selecting Naval Aviation, he earned his wings in June 2006 before moving to the Fleet Replacement Squadron in San Diego, CA and began training in the SH-60B. 
CDR Vogelgesang began his first sea tour at HSL-49 in 2007.  In 2010 he transferred to HSM-41 to qualify in the MH-60R and begin as an Instructor Pilot.  Then, CDR Vogelgesang became a plank owner; standing up HSM-35 in 2013.  His Department Head tour with HSM-71 included time as CEL 1 OIC and Maintenance Officer.  In 2017 he was sent to the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, RI.  Graduating in March of 2018, he became a Liaison Officer for the Joint Warfare Analysis Center in the Joint Staff Deputy Director for Global Operations (JS J39).
 Operational deployments include: 2007 onboard USS PRINCETON (CG-59)  in support of the USS NIMITZ STRIKE GROUP in the Seventh Fleet Area of Responsibility (AOR); in 2009, he was part of the first anti-piracy efforts off the Horn of Africa while deployed onboard the USS CHANCELLORSVILLE (CG-62) in support of USS RONALD REAGAN STRIKE GROUP and Operation Enduring Freedom; in 2016 he served onboard USS MOBILE BAY (CG-53) then on USS JOHN C. STENNIS in the Seventh Fleet AOR. 
CDR Vogelgesang earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the United States Naval Academy in 2004 and a Master of Science in Global Leadership from the University of San Diego in 2012.  He graduated in March 2018 from the U.S. Naval War College with his Joint Professional Military Education Phase 1 and a Master of Arts in National Defense and Strategic Studies. 
CDR Vogelgesang accumulated over 2400 flight hours earning every possible qualification over his 10 year flying career.  His awards include Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Naval and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), Naval and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards), and various unit commendation, service, and campaign awards.
Meeting his wife at the U.S. Naval Academy, CDR Vogelgesang is married to Major Lex Vogelgesang, USMC.  After serving 12 years active duty, she is now serving in the Reserves, working as a part-time Financial Planner, and raising their three kids: Ryan (10), Luke (8), and Lily (6).
