CDR Josh Peters, a native of Eugene, OR, graduated from Boston University in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism. He received a commission through the NROTC program, completed flight training, and was designated a Naval Aviator in June 2004.
After completing SH-60B Fleet Replacement Pilot training with the “Seahawks” of HSL-41 at NAS North Island, CDR Peters reported to the “Scorpions” of HSL-49 for his initial sea assignment. He completed deployments aboard USS Curts (FFG-38) and USS Thach (FFG-43), conducted disaster relief operations in the Philippines, and was named the 2008 Scorpion Pilot of the Year.
In 2009, LCDR Peters returned to the “Seahawks” of HSM-41 to transition to the MH-60R and serve as an Instructor Pilot. While at HSM-41, LCDR Peters completed the Seahawks Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course, and earned a Master’s Degree in International Relations from the University of San Diego.
In 2011, CDR Peters reported to Carrier Air Wing TWO, where he served as the helicopter operations officer and completed a deployment aboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.
For his Department Head tour, CDR Peters reported to the “BattleCats” of HSM-73 in 2013, where he served as Detachment OIC aboard USS Dewey (DDG-105) and squadron Operations Officer during a 10-month deployment aboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70). He was named the 2015 HSM Wing Pacific Officer of the Year.
Following his Department Head tour, CDR Peters moved to Fort Meade, MD to serve as the Five Eye Partnership Branch Chief within the Plans and Policy Directorate (J5) at U.S. Cyber Command. In 2018, he was named to the Queen of England’s New Year Honours list in recognition of his work to deepen U.S. and UK cooperation in the cyber domain.
Commander Peters reported to the “Griffins” of HSM-79 as Executive Officer in October 2018 and completed the squadron’s inaugural deployment aboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72). He took Command of the Griffins in December 2019.
CDR Peters has flown over 2,700 hours in naval aircraft. His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (four awards), and Navy Achievement Medal (three awards).
