Commander Clay Waddill

Commanding Officer, Patrol Squadron (VP) 46

29 October 2020 Commander Clay Waddill is a native of Vero Beach, Florida and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science from Florida State University in 1997. He was commissio​ned through the Officer Candidate School Program at NAS Pensacola, FL in March 2002 and earned his Naval Flight Officer Wings in August 2003.​

CDR Waddill began his operational flying with the "Scouts" of VS-24 from 2004-2007. He deployed aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) ISO OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM, completing S-3B Viking missions throughout the 6th, 5th and 4th Fleet AORs and was designated a Level 500 Tactics Instructor and Mission Commander He served as Readiness, Flight Schedules, NFO NATOPS, and Squadron Weapons and Tactics / ACTC Officer.

In 2007 CDR Waddill completed an Individual Augmentation (IA) tour with Joint Crew Composite Squadron ONE (JCCS-1) out of Bagdad, Iraq. He served with the 13th SCE and 316th ESC Army Logistics Divisions at Ballad Air Force Base as a mobile Electronic Jamming Training Officer for the Division Electronic Warfare Officer (EWO).

CDR Waddill reported to VP-30, in May 2008 for initial P-3C transition training. His operational assignment was to VP-45, NAS Jacksonville, FL from 2008-2011. While with the Pelicans, he completed two operational deployments to the 7th and 6th Fleet AORs and was designated an Instructor Tacco and Mission Commander. He served as Schedules Officer, Aviation/Armament Division Officer, NFO NATOPS and Senior Watch Officer.

In 2011, CDR Waddill reported to the "Pro's Nest" of VP-30, as Assistant Operations Officer and served as a Fleet Replacement Squadron Instructor Tacco, Instructor Under Training Instructor and Level 500 Weapons and Tactics Instructor.

Upon successfully screening for Department Head, CDR Waddill reported to the "Golden Swordsmen" of VP-47, MCAS Kaneohe Bay, HI from 2014-2016. There, as RIMPAC Officer-in-Charge, Tactics Officer, CTG 67.1 Operations Officer, Training Officer, and Operations Officer, he completed two combat deployments to the 6th and 7th Fleet AORs.

Most recently CDR Waddill completed a tour on the Joint Staff, J-3 Directorate. He served as a Presidential Strike Advisor and Emergency Action Officer in the National Military Command Center (J33). While on the Joint Staff CDR Waddill was selected for Operational Command and slated to VP-46, NAS Whidbey Island, WA.

CDR Waddill's awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Bronze Star, Air Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (3), Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3) and various service awards and ribbons.​​
