Commanding Officer, Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron (VQ) 7

29 October 2020 A native of Farmersburg, Indiana, Commander Drake graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2003, earning a Bachelor of Science in Political Science. After commissioning, CDR Drake attended graduate school at the University of Maryland, completing his studies in December 2003 and earning his Master’s Degree in Government and Politics.  CDR Drake reported to NAS Pensacola, FL for flight training in January 2004. He earned his Naval Aviator Wings in October 2005 and was selected as the JSUPT Leadership Award winner for his class. In November 2005, CDR Drake reported to Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron SEVEN (VQ-7) “Roughnecks” for initial fleet training as an E-6B pilot. 
 
CDR Drake’s sea duty assignments include tours with the “Shadows” of VQ-4 where he qualified as an Instructor Pilot and Mission Commander Evaluator, a tour onboard USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN-73) as a Catapult and Arresting Gear Officer where he was the TOPCAT, and his Department Head tour with the “Ironman” squadron of VQ-3 where he served as Safety Officer and Maintenance Officer.  While assigned to VQ-3, the “Ironman” squadron won the Safety “S”, the Maintenance Excellence Award and the Battle “E”.               
                         
CDR Drake’s shore assignments include a tour with the “Roughnecks” of VQ-7 as a Fleet Replacement Squadron Instructor Pilot.  During this tour, he served as the Pilot Training Officer and E-6B Evaluator/Assistant Model Manager and was selected as the Strategic Communications Wing ONE Junior Officer of the Year. He also did a Joint Tour at Cheyenne Mountain where he served as a Crew Commander and the J5, Chief of Plans and Programs, for the Missile Warning Center.
 
CDR Drake has accumulated over 2,300 flight hours in 4 aircraft, including 50 missions in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM. His awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Strike/Flight Air Medal (2 awards), Navy Commendation Medal (3 awards), and Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2 awards) and various service awards and ribbons.rvice awards and ribbons.
