Captain Wi​lliam R. McCombs

29 October 2020 Captain Will McCombs is a native of Concord, California.  He is a 1996 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.  He was designated a Naval Flight Officer in 1998.  He holds a Master of Science in Aeronautical Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California and is a graduate of U.S. Naval Test Pilot School, Class 126.

McCombs’ operational tours at Naval Air Station (NAS) Whidbey Island, Washington include Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 134, VAQ-135, and VAQ-132, where he served as the Executive and Commanding Officer.  He flew in Operations ALLIED FORCE, NORTHERN WATCH, SOUTHERN WATCH, ENDURING FREEDOM, and IRAQI FREEDOM.

McCombs also completed a developmental test tour at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland with Air Test and Evaluation Squadron (VX) 23.  His joint tour was with the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and U.S. Northern Command in Colorado Springs, Colorado where he served as the Air and Missile Defense Branch Head for the Science and Technology Directorate.  He served as the Next Generation Jammer Mid Band Integration lead at the Airborne Electronic Attack Program Office, PMA-234, at NAS Patuxent River, prior to reporting to Air Test and Evaluation Squadron NINE (VX-9) at China Lake in March 2018.

McCombs has flown over 3,000 flight hours in more than 15 type, model, series aircraft, including over 1,800 in the EA-6B and over 700 in the EA-18G.  He has more than 300 arrested landings in the EA-6B.  His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Strike Flight Air Medal (five awards), and various other personal and unit awards.
