A native of Dallas, TX, Commander Hockaday graduated from Jacksonville University in 2002, earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. CDR Hockaday was commissioned through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Program and reported to NAS Pensacola, FL for flight training in May 2002. He earned his Naval Aviator Wings in September 2003. In October 2003, CDR Hockaday reported to the HSL 40 “Airwolves” for initial fleet training as a SH-60B Pilot.
CDR Hockaday began his operational flying in July 2004 with the “Swamp Foxes” of HSL 44. While a “Swamp Fox”, he made two deployments aboard USS WINSTON S. CHURCHILL (DDG 81) and USS UNDERWOOD (FFG 36), participating in Operation ENDURING FREEDOM and Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.
CDR Hockaday reported to the HSM Weapons School Atlantic in August 2007 and departed in September to attend the Seahawk Weapons and Tactics Instructor (SWTI) course. After graduating, he returned to the Weapons School and served as an instructor and program manager until April 2010 when he departed to HSM 41 for transition training to the MH-60R. CDR Hockaday was the command’s Instructor Pilot of the Year for 2009.
CDR Hockaday reported to the HSM 70 “Spartans” in July 2010 as the squadron’s Training Officer. While with the “Spartans” he deployed aboard USS GEORGE H.W. BUSH (CVN 77), participating in Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. CDR Hockaday was the HSM-70 Pilot of the Year and the Naval Helicopter Association Pilot of the Year for 2012.
CDR Hockaday reported as a Department Head in HSM 78, the “Bluehawks”. While with the Bluehawks, he completed one deployment aboard USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73) in support of Operation SOUTHERN SEAS, serving as both Operations Officer and Maintenance Officer. While assigned to HSM 78, CDR Hockaday was selected as the 2014 Officer of the Year.
Following his department head tour, CDR Hockaday attended the US Naval War College from 2016-2017 and graduated with distinction. Following the War College, he served as an action officer, U.S. Cyber Command, J-5 Directorate. While at Cyber Command, he directly supported cyber partnership development for Europe and NATO.
CDR Hockaday has accumulated over 2,800 flight hours. His awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Strike/Flight Air Medal (1 award), Navy Commendation Medal (3 awards), and Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2 awards) and various service awards and ribbons.
