CDR Nicholas Sylvester hails from Greenwood, Indiana. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science. He was designated a Naval Aviator in April 2003, and assigned to Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron TEN (HS-10), NAS North Island, California, for Fleet Replacement training in the SH-60F and HH-60H helicopters.
Upon completion of training, CDR Sylvester reported to HS-8, where he served as the Legal Officer, Aircraft Division Officer, Tactics Officer, and NATOPS Officer. While at HS-8, CDR Sylvester made deployments on USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70) and USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN 74) to the Fifth Fleet AOR in support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM.
In May of 2007, CDR Sylvester reported to HS-10 as an SH-60F/HH-60H Instructor Pilot where he served as the Legal Officer and Quality Assurance Officer (QAO). While at HS-10, he deployed to the Seventh Fleet AOR in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM-PHILIPPINES. Upon return from that deployment, CDR Sylvester graduated from the Seahawk Weapons and Tactics Instructor course at the Naval Aviation Warfighter Development Center (NAWDC) in Fallon, Nevada.
In October 2009, CDR Sylvester reported to Carrier Air Wing SEVENTEEN (CVW-17) for duty as the Helicopter Readiness Officer. While onboard CVW-17, he deployed twice on USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70) participating in Operation UNIFIED RESPONSE in Haiti and Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and NEW DAWN in the Fifth Fleet AOR.
CDR Sylvester reported to HS-15 for duty as a Department Head in January 2012. While at HS-15 he served as the Training/Tactics Officer and Operations Officer as well as participated in the transitioning of the squadron from the legacy H-60F/H to the new MH-60S helicopter. During his department head tour he deployed on USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70) to the Fifth Fleet AOR in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. In February 2014, he reported to U.S. Naval War College, Newport, RI.
He graduated from the U.S Naval War College in March 2015 earning a Master of Arts Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies then reported to United States Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) at Offutt Air Force Base (AFB), Omaha, Nebraska where he served as the Global Wargaming Branch Chief in the Joint Exercises Training and Assessments Directorate (J7). He completed his joint tour in September 2017. CDR Sylvester reported to Helicopter Sea Combat Weapons School Pacific (HSCWSP) in March 2019 as the Executive Officer and ascended to Command of HSCWSP in April 2020.
CDR Sylvester has been awarded the Air Medal (First Strike Flight), the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal six times, the Navy Achievement Medal, and various service medals. Additionally he was recognized as the HS-8 Pilot of the Year 2006, HS-10 Pilot of the Year 2009, and was the recipient of the Navy and Marine Corps Association Leadership Award 2012, representing HSC Wing Pacific.
