Captain Kanan Ott, a native of Anaheim CA, graduated (1995) with honors from the University of California-Irvine, with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science.
He received his commission through Officer Candidate School in 1996 and his Wings of Gold in 1998. After initial training in the P-3C aircraft at Patrol Squadron THIRTY (VP-30), he reported to Patrol Squadron FOUR-SEVEN (VP-47), at Marine Corps Base (MCB) Hawaii (1999). During this first Fleet tour, he achieved designation as Patrol Plane Mission Commander and instructor pilot and deployed to Japan, Diego Garcia, Oman, Bahrain, and Kuwait.
In 2002, Captain Ott returned to VP-30, as a Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) Instructor, earning the Weapons and Tactics Instructor (WTI) qualification. In 2005, he reported to Special Projects Patrol Squadron TWO (VPU-2) at MCB Hawaii. During this tour he deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Djibouti, in support of Operations IRAQI and ENDURING FREEDOM.
In 2007, Captain Ott transitioned to the Reserve Component as a Full-Time Support (FTS) Officer and reported to Fleet Logistics Support Squadron FIVE SEVEN (VR-57), San Diego CA, where he qualified on the C-40A Clipper aircraft. During this tour, he served as an Individual Augmentee (IA) in Bahrain, supporting Commander, Task Force FIVE THREE (CTF-53) as the VR community liaison. Upon his return from Bahrain, he served as squadron Maintenance and then Operations Department Head.
Following VR-57, Captain Ott attended Command & General Staff School, Fort Leavenworth Kansas, earning JPME and a Master of Military Arts and Sciences. In 2010, he reported to BUPERS-3, Millington, Tennessee, where he served as the FTS Officer Community Manager, responsible for FTS officer accessions, retention and promotion planning. During this tour, he completed an executive MBA program.
March 2013, Captain Ott reported to Fleet Logistics Support Squadron FIVE ONE (VR-51), MCB Hawaii, as the Executive Officer and then fleeted up to Commanding Officer. After a successful command tour leading a fantastic group of Sailors employing the G-IV aircraft, he reported to Commander, Navy Region Europe, Africa, and Central (2015), as the Operational Support Officer (OSO). In addition to managing 520 Reserve billets, Captain Ott served as Deputy N1, responsible for Total Force Manning & Manpower.
September 2018, Captain Ott reported as Commanding Officer of Navy Operational Support Center (NOSC) Alameda CA where he led a talented team generating mobilization readiness for 680 citizen-Sailors. CAPT Ott currently serves as the Commanding Officer of Navy Air Logistics Office (NALO), New Orleans LA, responsible for the effective and efficient worldwide utilization of Navy-unique fixed-wing medium airlift comprised of 41 C-40 and C-130 aircraft. Team NUFEA provides “freedom of maneuver” to the Fleet.
Captain Ott has been awarded several personal and unit awards and has flown over 3,500 flight hours.
