Capt. Brian T. Schrum is a native of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1996, majoring in political science with a minor in German.
 
Upon earning his commission, Schrum reported to Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida for flight training and earned his “Wings of Gold” from Naval Air Station Kingsville, Texas, in June 1999. He was selected to fly F/A-18 Hornets and reported to the “Rough Raiders” of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 125.
 
Following completion of F/A-18 training at VFA-125, Schrum joined the “Rampagers” of VFA-83 and completed two Mediterranean/Persian Gulf deployments aboard USS George Washington (CVN 73).  In July 2003, Schrum reported to the United States Naval Test Pilot School where he completed the flight/engineering curriculum with Class 125 and was ordered to the “Salty Dogs” of Strike Test and Evaluation Squadron (VX) 23 where he worked in the ordnance support and carrier suitability departments as a test pilot and project officer.
 
In October 2007, Schrum joined the “Blue Blasters” of VFA-34 and completed a deployment aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), where he conducted combat missions in support of Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom (OIF/OEF).
 
In February 2010, Schrum reported to U.S. Special Operations Command, where he served as a staff officer in the J8 directorate. In August 2013, Schrum served as executive officer and went on to command the “Stingers” of VFA 113 from August 2014 to December 2015, deploying aboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) in support Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR).
 
Following his command tour, Schrum was selected to the nuclear power pipeline and reported to Naval Nuclear Power Training Command in Charleston, SC.  In August 2017, he joined the USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) where he served as the executive officer until September 2019.
 
From July 2020 to September 2021, Schrum commanded USS New Orleans (LPD 18), forward deployed to Sasebo, Japan. Following his tour on USS New Orleans he served on staff at Commander, Naval Air Forces Pacific.
 
Capt. Schrum has accumulated more than 2,700 flight hours and 680 arrested landings. He is the recipient of various personal and campaign awards, including the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, three Strike/Flight Air Medals, Joint Service Achievement Award, two Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medals, a Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal and various other individual and unit citations.
