He received his commission through Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida, in 2000 and earned his designation as an E-2C Hawkeye Naval Flight Officer in 2003.
Following flight training, he reported to the VAW-116 “Sun Kings” for his initial operational assignment, completing two Western Pacific (WESTPAC) deployments and participating in numerous combined training exercises.

In 2006, CDR Gill was assigned to the Combined Air Operations Center at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, where he served as a Master Air Attack Planner. He subsequently reported to Training Squadron TEN (VT-10) in Pensacola, where he trained hundreds of student flight officers at the outset of their naval aviation careers.

Transitioning to the Navy Reserve in 2010, CDR Gill joined VAW-77 “Night wolves” at NAS JRB New Orleans as a Full-Time Support (FTS) officer. Between 2010 and 2013, he deployed eight times in support of counter-narcotics operations across Central and South America. Following the decommissioning of VAW-77, he attended the Naval Postgraduate School, earning a Master’s in Financial Management in 2014.

In 2016, he assumed command of Navy Reserve Center (NRC) Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he was responsible for the deployment readiness of over 170 reservists and the oversight of more than 50 command programs. After completing a successful command tour, he reported to the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (OPNAV N8) in Norfolk, Virginia, as the Deputy Branch Head for Reserve Personnel Navy (RPN). There, he managed the $1 billion Reserve Personnel budget over a three-year period.
