He was designated a Naval Aviator in January 2008, and completed initial F/A-18 qualification at VFA-125 in Lemoore, CA in December 2009. CDR Lutz reported to VFA-195 in 2009 for his first operational tour, and completed three deployments aboard USS George Washington (CVN 73) in support of 7th Fleet continuing operations. In 2013, CDR Lutz reported to VT-21 in Kingsville, TX and served as an instructor in the mighty T-45 “Goshawk.” In 2017, CDR Lutz returned to the fleet, reporting to VFA-113 where he served as a Department Head and completed a deployment onboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. In 2020, CDR Lutz was assigned to VFA-122 where he served as the Safety Officer and Quality Assurance Officer. While in the VFA-122, CDR Lutz was selected for operational squadron command and slated to VFA-136 the “Knighthawks.” He reported to VFA-136 as Executive Officer in March 2023. CDR Lutz has accumulated over 2,000 flight hours in the F/A-18A-F and 1,000 hours in the T-45. He has over 500 arrested landings. He is married to Caroline Lutz, Esq. who practices law in the Fresno, CA area. Caroline is a member of the Military Spouse J.D. Network and proudly connects military spouses with employment opportunities in the legal field through the Veterans Affinity Group at her law firm.
